The Essay Contest invites students to turn reflection into scholarship opportunity. Write with honesty, respond to the official Optimist International topic, and submit through the Anchorage club by January 31, 2027.

A scholarship through self-expression
The Essay Contest is built for students with something to say.
This Optimist International program gives young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions, experiences, and view of the world.
The Optimist Club of Anchorage hosts the local contest, reviews student submissions, and advances the club winner to the District scholarship competition. Local judging is completed after the submission window closes, and late entries are not accepted.

Where to enter?
Contestants enter through a local Optimist Club in the District where they reside. Anchorage-area students should apply through the Anchorage club.
What can win?
The local club winner advances to District competition. The District first-place award is a $2,500 college scholarship.
What is required?
A completed application, original essay, title page, required signatures, and proof of age and identity before participating.

Write the essay
Submit an original, typed, double-spaced, single-sided essay of 700 to 800 words on the official topic.
Prepare the title page
Include the topic, word count, writer name, address, phone number, school name, and date of birth.
Send it by the deadline
Submit the completed application and essay to the scholarship team no later than January 31, 2027.
Important: late entries are not accepted. If you are unsure about eligibility, formatting, or how to send your packet, contact the scholarship team before the deadline.

Small details can affect scoring.
The application lists penalties for missing the topic, missing the word count, formatting issues, going over or under the word limit, and identifying yourself inside the essay.

Use the official topic.
The official topic should appear on the title page and at the top of page 1 of the essay.

Stay within 700-800 words.
Every word of the essay counts. The title, bibliography, and footnotes do not count toward the total.

Number each essay page.
Start numbering with page 1, not the title page, and center page numbers at the bottom of each page.

Cite outside material.
Quotes and copyrighted material must be identified using a recognized citation format such as MLA, APA, or Chicago style.

Protect anonymous judging.
Do not identify the contestant, parents, school, community, sponsoring club, or District within the essay itself.

Judges look for clear thinking, strong writing, and rule-ready work.
Material organization
Logical interpretation of the subject and adherence to the topic.
Vocabulary and style
Phrasing, continuity, word choice, and the quality of the writer's voice.
Grammar and mechanics
Grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Creativity
Original insight, fresh expression, and a thoughtful response to the prompt.
Adherence to rules
Prepared in the proper format and aligned with contest requirements.

Who is eligible to enter?
Contestants must be under age 19 as of October 1, 2026 and must not yet have completed secondary school or its equivalent. The rules list no minimum age.
Can a student enter more than one Optimist Club contest?
No. Contestants are eligible for only one Optimist Club Essay Contest during a contest year. A previous District Essay scholarship winner is not eligible to compete again.
How long should the essay be?
The essay must be at least 700 words and no more than 800 words. Hyphenated words count as one word. The title, bibliography, and footnotes are not included in the count.
Can students use AI or copied material?
The contestant agreement states that entries may be run through plagiarism and AI detection software, and contestants must certify the submission is their own original work. Any outside quotations or copyrighted material must be properly cited.
What happens after the local contest?
The winner of the local Anchorage club contest advances to the District scholarship competition. Local judging is completed in February, and the sponsoring club contacts the winners.
What proof of age is required?
Contestants must provide proof of age and identity before participating, using a copy of either a birth certificate or passport. The club winner's document is submitted to the District contest.
